Letter: Human Trafficking Forum

Published: Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015 5:30 a.m. CST

Did you know there are an estimated 27 million people enslaved in the world today?

That’s more people being bought, sold and exploited for profit than at any other time in human history. What’s even more shocking is this atrocity is happening in our own backyards.

Many believe the myth that human trafficking only occurs in distant countries. In reality, it happens every day, in all 50 states, with Chicago being a national hub for sex trafficking. Popular social media sites are now traffickers’ number one recruiting tool to target children – your children – to lure them into prostitution.

The Human Trafficking Freedom Coalition of Northern Illinois and McHenry County College’s Generation End It student group are sponsoring “Shine a Light on Human Trafficking” – a free, informative forum – from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at MCC’s Luecht Conference Center.

Experts in the field will address the global and local impact of human trafficking. Learn how to spot the signs of a trafficking victim, and how you can protect your children from being sexually exploited. For information, check out Don’t miss this important event. No doubt your eyes will be opened.
